DO NOT hold Israeli military exhibition in Kawasaki:
Invitation for a Mass Protest Action
2018 8/29 wed 11:30-13:30 at Front of Todoroki-arena (15 min walk from Musashi-Nakahara station on JR Nambu line)
In the Middle East, conflict has been a recurring problem for the region and its people. Israeli aggression, underpinned by Israel’s massive weapons industry, has been at the center of much of this instability for decades.
At the end of August, ISDEF (Israel Defense & HLS Expo) will be held in Kawasaki, Japan.
The Kawasaki city government has held up “multiculturalism” as a central policy and declared “Peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons” as a goal of the city.
In 2006, the Kawasaki city government signed the UN Global Compact, a UN initiative designed to encourage the adoption of sustainable and socially responsible policies with over 13,000 civil society organizations as signatories. Notably, Kawasaki is the only city in Japan to have signed this global agreement. In the agreement, two basic human rights principles are outlined:
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of
internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
The ISDEF expo will be held at the Todoroki Arena in Kawasaki city. This is a facility meant for civil sports and cultural events, making it completely unsuitable for an event that clearly violates the city’s stated policies including respect for international human rights.
We have pressured Kawasaki city government to cancel this event but they have so far refused to change their decision.
This expo will display arms and surveillance systems that have seen real-life testing in the form of violent suppression against the occupied people of Palestine.
The goal of the expo is to sell this equipment to the Japanese government and private security organizations for their use in preparation of and during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. We cannot allow in our city such an exhibition that supports the criminal activities of the Israeli defense industry and turns the Olympic Games into a “festival of exclusion.”
To protest ISDEF, we will hold a mass protest action in front of the Todoroki Arena on August 29th, the first day of the exhibition. We invite all peoples and members of the media to this protest action. Your thoughtful and civil placards and banners are welcome.
